Daybeds
How long has the daybed been a popular feature in homes? Take a guess. You’ll be surprised to know that daybeds were made popular in China, during the Ming dynasty from 1368 to 1644. Their style and size has changed over the years, but the basic dual purpose, space saving theme has endured through the years.
A few years back, most of the daybeds purchased were for little girl’s bedrooms. But that is not so today. There are a ton of styles including those appropriate for dens, family rooms, sunrooms as well as bedrooms for every member of the family. Daybeds provide comfortable seating options similar to a couch for daylight hours and soft, cozy beds for sleeping at night. They are a great solution for any room or apartment that has limited floor space. In recent years the popularity of the daybed has risen dramatically.
Styles
The vast majority of daybeds are constructed out of wood, iron, metal
or a combination of both wood and metal. They come with a variety of finishes.
You should be able to find a daybed style to
match your taste in decorating. We’ve seen a number of styles including
Mission, Chateau, Sleigh, Colonial and Victorian.
Frames
Most daybed frames consist of three
pieces: two side panels and one back panel. Each frame holds one standard twin
mattress. When purchasing, expect some minor assembly.
The popular day link spring creates a stable bed. It is simply the cross bar
that runs from the two side panels across the front of the frame. This fully
supports the mattress and the individuals
who will be using it to sit on or to sleep on. The day link spring comes with
many models and can be purchased separately when needed.
Options
Beyond the traditional daybed is the pop-up trundle,
which doubles the sleeping surface when it is in place. Instead of having a
twin mattress, the pop-up trundle gives you a king size bed. During the day
it is concealed under the bed. There is also the traditional trundle option
that pulls out and provides a second sleeping surface. They do not elevate but
stay in place. Trundle beds are great for a child’s sleepover or for a
younger sibling. Both varieties of trundles are easy to use; even most children
can pull them out or slide them back in place.
Accessories
A room’s décor can really be enhanced when you add a few
accessories to your daybed. Choose a comforter
with matching window treatments. Add complementing linens
and pillows. Don’t forget to include a few decorative pillows or bolsters
to the bed. Immediately your daybed will become the focal point of any room
and will beckon your family and guests to sit on it or even sleep on it.
Daybeds truly provide a convenient option. By serving as both a lovely sofa and a comfortable bed, they become two pieces of furniture in one. They are easy to use and don’t take up much room. It’s no wonder that daybeds have become a popular piece of furniture.
